Two St. C swimmers headed to state meet

ATHENS — The St. Clairsville Red Devils dove into their OHSAA DII District Swim Meet on the campus of Ohio University on Friday, and earned entry to the state meet for a pair of their competitors.

The Red Devils’ Zach May and Adrienne Lowe qualified for the state meet, set for Feb. 18-22 in Canton.

May finished fourth in the boys 50 meter freestyle in his district, with a time of 21.75, which has him in 13th across all districts.

May also finished in third in the 100 meter freestyle in his district, eighth across all districts, going the distance in 21.75 seconds.

Adrienne Lowe finished in fourth in the girls 500 meter freestyle with a 5:34.67. The time was good enough for 29th across all districts, as of the latest standing update before printing.

“Zach, we felt like he was in the running, he was going to make it,” St. Clairsville head coach Ernie Banks said. “Zach was right there. Adrienne gave it everything she had. Adrienne was a pleasant surprise. She swims with all heart, and she needed every bit of it today to get in.”

Red Devils girls Abby Brocklehurst, Claire Daubenmeyer, Karlee Higgins, McKenna Miller, Ryah Newell, Isabelle Morgan, Luci Banks and Lowe, as well as boys Caden Blacker, Brayden Kralovic, Cohen Snyder, Luke Stack and May qualified for the district meet thanks to strong performances at sectionals.

“The girls today followed suit with what they’ve been doing all year- dropped time where needed, had a lot of podium finishes, the girls did great,” Banks said. “The boys, we had one missing because of the flu, but the boys all dropped time and they did all they could.”

Banks, Daubenmeyer, Lowe, Miller, Kralovic, May and Stack are all seniors who competed in districts, signalling the end of many of their time with the St. Clairsville swim team.

“I’ve known most of these seniors since they were under 10 years old, some of them, I’ve seen them since they were six,” Banks said. I’m going to truly miss them, inside and outside of the pool. I’ve known them for so many years- hate to see them go, it’s bittersweet.”

But for May and Lowe, one more meet is ahead.

“They’re excited,” Banks said.
