High School Roundup: Maroon Knights Dominant vs. Oak Glen; Emma Skinner Tosses Five-Inning No-Hitter

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights’ offense and defense one-upped each other throughout their road game over the Oak Glen Golden Bears on Wednesday, the Knights finishing with 13 hits of their own, and a combined one-hitter for their opposition in an 11-0 victory.

Seth Cover got the win on the mound and struck out nine over four innings. Gary Hatfield and Andy Bailer worked the rest of the way.

Hatfield and Braxton Billick each cracked triples at the plate as part of two-hits days. Seth Cover tallied four hits and had a game-high three RBI.

Central stole seven bases as a team. They scored seven runs between the sixth and seventh innings.

Bryce Cooper had Oak Glen’s lone knock.

SOFTBALL

Harrison Central 16, St. Clairsville 1

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Emma Skinner tossed a no-hitter as the Huskies exploded for nine runs in the top of the fifth inning in sweeping the regular-season series with the host Red Devils.

Skinner didn’t strike out a batter, not walk a batter during her gem.

Freshman Kelcey Powers slapped five singles and drove in a run to lead Harrison Central’s 16-hit attack. Bailey Smith singled thrice and knocked in three runs, while Kara Blackburn had two RBI with a single and double. Olivia Tonkovich tripled twice to drive in a run and Jaylin Ward added a run-scoring three-bagger.

Martins Ferry 9, Indian Creek 7

MARTINS FERRY – The Purple Riders (3-1) rallied from a 6-5 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and then held off the visiting Redskins.

Giana Chirpas belted a three-run homer for Martins Ferry, her second in two games. Kendyl Brandon slapped three singles and winning pitcher Abbey Snedeker plated two runs with a single and double.

Both teams scored 5 runs in the third inning.

Snedeker fanned eight and walked just one to earn the win.

Karen Dray doubled twice and knocked in three runs for Indian Creek.

Shadyside 5, Buckeye Local 4

SHADYSIDE – A Panther comeback came up a little short against the Tigers.

In the battle of big cats, Shadyside preserved their lead despite two runs from Buckeye Local in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Ariana Saxton pitched a complete game for the Tigers, garnering 13 strikouts.

Buckeye Local did their share of damage though, with Lexi Neilly and Danika Bauknecht each homering.

Jourdan Walker had a home run of her own for Shadyside, finishing with three RBI on a pair of hits.
