South throws perfect game at Wheeling Central
ELM GROVE — If you like dominating high school pitching then the JB Chambers I-470 Complex was the place to be Saturday afternoon.
Wheeling Central’s Josie Frizzell was brilliant. She fanned 13, walked none and yielded just three hits.
Parkersburg South’s Anniston Shelton, however, was perfect. Truly perfect. The freshman phenom fanned 17 while not allowing a Maroon Knight to reach base.
The quickly-played 76-minute affair resulted in a 1-0 Lady Patriot win. The Wood Countians pushed their record to 7-0.
“She has only pitched three or four games this year. We save her for the best teams,” South head coach Tim Burch said of Shelton. “Central is definitely a very good team. Anniston can throw it 66-67 (mph). By the time she is done she will be throwing in the upper 70s. She is a great young lady who is concerned more about team wins than personal achievements.
“We beat Dover earlier this year. Their pitcher is an Ohio State commit. Jose Frizzell has more spin on the ball than she does. Josie is a tremendous pitcher,” he added. “This was a fun game to play. It was well-played by two very good teams.”
Central, coming off a 15-2 six-inning beatdown of Toronto, dropped to 5-2 on the season, the other blemish coming at the hands of University. In Frizzell’s last start on Thursday, she turned in a legendary performance. She struck out 25 in a 2-1 win over Edison in 10 innings.
The Maroon Knights, the reigning OVAC 3A champions, return to action Monday night at Oak Glen.
Shelton’s bat also played a big part in the game’s lone run. She blooped a double to short right field. Allison Marcum then delivered the game-winning RBI with a solid line drive double to left center.
Parkersburg South never threatened otherwise. The Lady Patriots’ other hit was a single off the bat of Jaidan Vargas.
“As the game went on I knew I was working on a perfect game. I wasn’t nervous,” Shelton said. “Going into the last inning I was just worried about getting the win for the team.”
Shelton’s perfecto was saved by a diving web-gem catch by Marcum, South’s left fielder, in the fifth inning. It came off the bat of frosh Sydney Hupp.
“There is not much you can say,” Wheeling Central head coach Buck Davidson said. “We lost to a great pitcher. We probably won’t see anyone that good again in the circle this year. Josie also pitched a very good game for us. She only gave up three hits.
“This is a game that will pay dividends later on. It made us better,” added. “We have a very good schedule this year. We want to play the best teams possible.”
