2025 OVAC Tennis Championships set for Monday at John Marshall
GLEN DALE – The 2025 OVAC Tennis Championships will be held at the John Marshall High School tennis facility beginning Monday, April 28 and running through Thursday, May 1. This year’s event begins with boy’s doubles action on Monday followed by boy’s singles play on Tuesday. Girl’s doubles matches will be contested on Wednesday and wrap up on Thursday with girl’s singles competition. All match play begins each morning at 8:30 a.m..
Match play will be moved each day to the Wheeling Park Tennis Bubble on any day that weather does not permit play at John Marshall High School.
A team champion and runner up in both girls and boys school competition will be decided over the course of the 4-day event in two divisions again this year, 1A-4A (small school) and 5A (large school). Each match win in singles or doubles scores a team point for the school being represented. A special team trophy will be awarded to the girls and boys champion in both 1A-4A and 5A divisions. Runner-up teams in both divisions will be awarded a special plaque. Singles and doubles champions in all divisions, girls and boys, will also be awarded individual medals.
The defending champions from 2024 are the Linsly girls in the 1A-4A division for their 13th straight OVAC title. The University High girls are the defending champions in the 5A division. The 2024 boys defending champions in the 1A-4A division are the Linsly boys and the Morgantown High boys are defending champions in the 5A division.
During the OVAC Tennis Championships, coaches will be evaluating sportsmanship by all players to determine a special award for the one female and one male who exhibits the utmost in fairness, attitude and sportsmanship throughout the tournament for the prestigious Carol Strasser Sportsmanship Award. Carol was a long-time Ohio Valley outstanding tennis player and former OVAC Tennis Director. This award was created to honor her work and commitment to tennis and her outstanding character on and off the court!
The tournament seeding for all divisions by coaches will be held Sunday, April 27 at Wheeling Park High School beginning with the boy’s seeding at 4:30 p.m. followed by the girl’s seeding at 6.
