Ferry dominates host Monroe Central girls

WOODSFIELD –Martins Ferry continued its dominance on the Ohio Valley softball circuit Saturday by pounding host Monroe Central twice by scores of 10-1 and 16-4. The Purple Riders have now won 15 in a row after a season-opening setback.

Martins Ferry sits atop the OVAC Class 3A standings with the cut-off date to make the playoffs set for this coming Saturday.

In the opener, Maddie Lucas was a one-player wrecking crew with a single, two home runs and five runs batted in. She also struck out 10, walked four and gave up four hits.

Averi Hughes belted a three-run homer and singled while Abby Snedeker singled and doubled.

Bailee McFrederick singled in the Seminoles run.

In the nightcap, Giana Chirpas slugged two homers and singled to account for three RBI. Samantha Goddard singled twice, homered and drove in three runs while winning pitcher Snedeker missed the cycle by a triple and knocked in a pair of runs.

Snedeker went the first four frames, striking out nine and walking six.

McFrederick had a two-run triple for Monroe Central.

Wheeling Park 9, Petersburg 6

CLARKSBURG — The Patriots scored four times in the bottom of the fifth and then held off the Vikings at Robert C. Byrd High School.

Bryn Ernest singled and doubled to drive in a run, while Brenna Tipton had two singles and an RBI for Wheeling Park. Grace Tamburin singled twice to drive in a run.

Emma Wear earned the win with relief help from Harmony Bittner.

CADIZ — The Huskies swept a split doubleheader with the Cardinals and Bobcats to keep pace for an OVAC Class 4A playoff berth.

In the first game, Mikayla Pelegreen fanned 11, walked a pair and gave up three singles. Kamryn Crothers had the game’s lone RBI.

In the second game, Olivia Tonkovich belted a grand slam and sacrifice fly to account for five runs batted in. Kelcey Powers drove in four runs with two singles and a triple. Pelegreen and Halei Toker each drove in two runs.

KIDWELL — The Pilots took a pair of games from the host Silver Knights.

In the opener, Ava Wohnhas struck out 12, walked three and scattered two hits while batterymate Kaylee Hagan singled twice and homered to drive in three runs. Mallorie Maddy had a trio of singles.

In the nightcap, Maddy knocked in six runs with a single, double and home run. She was also the winning pitcher.

Wohnhas knocked in three runs with a pair of doubles while Macy Orndorff singled three times and drove in two runs. Jenna Talbot also singled twice and plated a run. Hagan added a single, double and RBI.

MORRISTOWN — The Jets continued their winning ways with a twinbill sweep of the visiting Blue Devils.

In the first game, Union Local took advantage of 15 walks by Beallsville pitching while Lil Blakley drove in three runs with two singles and a double.

Khloe Gallagher earned the win inside the circle with seven Ks and two walks in four innings.

In the second game, Edyn McGary doubled in two runs and Laken Vinskovich singled in two more as the Jets soared. Kylie Stidd fanned seven and walked one in the five-inning affair.

BECKLEY — The Dragons swept a pair of games on Saturday.

In the first game, Soier Reed had two singles and a home run that accounted for three RBI and Anthony Bellanco drove in three with two singles. Zayde Long singled and doubled to plate two runs and Hunter Evans singled twice to knock in a pair.

In the second game, Reed slapped three singles and Wes Starcher went the distance on the mound with four strikeouts and four walks/. He also singled twice.

BARNESVILLE — The Shamrocks bounced back from a tough loss to Martins Ferry a night earlier as they took a 7-0 lead after two innings at Memorial Park.

Winning pitcher Casey Carpenter (2 singles)and Brayden Watters (single) each drove in two runs. Marshall Meade had a run-scoring double.
