High School Roundup: Saunders Shuts Out Ferry; Jackson Comes Through For Tyler
MARTINS FERRY – St. Clairsville’s Brody Saunders was in mid-season form Tuesday as the Ashland University recruit struck out 12 batters, walked one and spaced out four hits as the visiting Red Devils posted a 5-0 shut out of Martins Ferry in high school baseball action high stop the Purple City.
Roby Hanna and Niko Jacob each singled in a run while Ryan Ivey and Caiden Bailey had doubles.
Kolson Ludolph singled twice for the Purple Riders.
The same two teams meet again today as St. Clairsville opens the home season at the Jr. Sports Complex on North Market Street.
Tyler Consolidated 14, St. Marys 4
KIDWELL – The Silver Knights (4-3) received three doubles and six runs batted in from No. 8 hitter Isaac Jackson in rolling past the visiting Blue Devils in six innings.
Sawyer Kunkle, the No. 9 batter in the order, drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Reese Davis belted a three-run double and Brayden Neff singled and homered to account for two ribbies. Landon Boggs and Brennon Miller evenl;y divided four one-base hits.
Miller relieved Davis in the second to earn the win. He fanned seven, walked two and scattered three hits.
Indian Creek 6, Buckeye Local 2
WINTERSVILLE – The debuting Redskins, fresh off their Ohio Division II Final Four last spring, received a single, sacrifice fly and three RBI from Sy Barcalow. Winning pitcher Sylus Hyde added an RBI single, as did batterymate Hunder Rusnak.
Hyde fanned seven and walked four in five innings. Gavib Pownall had 4 Ks and a walk. They teamed on a 4-hitter – all singles.
Alex McDiffitt had half of those hits. Wyatt Luyster and Kaleb Stang each had an RBI.
John Marshall 8, Steubenville 0
STEUBENVILLE – The game of baseball often comes down to which team takes advantage of its opportunities.
Tuesday evening at the Crimson Complex, visiting John Marshall had an opportunity to break things open in the third inning, and the Monarchs took advantage.
On the other side, host Big Red left nine guys on base and did not get any of its seven hits with runners in scoring position.
After the Monarchs (5-2) had gotten a run each in the first and second innings, they plated five in the third to take complete control of things with a 7-0 lead.
Jacob Cisar had a two-run triple to get things going, then Kain Ankrom added an RBI single and Hayden Gaiser doubled in two more runs.
On the mound, Hayden Hughes scattered seven hits in going the distance for the Monarchs, striking out six and walking two.
AJ Borsch came in the fourth for Big Red (0-3) and tossed three scoreless innings, striking out two without issuing a walk.
Barnesville 9, River 7
BARNESVILLE – A six-run third inning set up the Shamrocks for a home victory Tuesday over the Pilots.
After two scoreless innings, Barnesville led 6-2 after the third. River put up five runs between the fifth and seventh frames but the homestanding ‘Rocks were able to keep pace enough to preserve the win.
Barnesville’s Marshall Meade knocked a double and drove in two; Blake Burkhart also had a double and drove in three. Meade also stole two bases.
River’s Peyton Blue collected four RBI and a double, the Pilots’ lone extra-base hit. River out-hit the victorious Shamrocks 10-7. Each team committed one error.
Jefferson County Christian 10, Leetonia 3
LEETONIA — Lee Gump threw five innings and picked up the win for the visiting Royals. Wyatt Hervey pitched the final two innings to preserve the win.
Carson Duvall and Aiden Howard doubled for the winners. JCCS moves to 4-2.

Martins Ferry 6, Linsly 3
MARTINS FERRY – The Purple Riders (5-1) completed the early season sweep of the visiting Cadets as Giana Chirpas came up a single shy of the cycle. She also drove in three runs.
Abbey Snedeker also singled three times while Makayla Cole and Kendyl Brandon evenly split four one-base raps.
Maddie Lucas went the first five innings inside the circle to collect the win. She struck out six and walked one.
Alyssa Heath singled twice and drove in a run. Madison Applegarth also knocked in a run with a single and double. Kimber Kotson tripled.
Monroe Central 6, Magnolia 1
NEW MARTINSVILLE – The visiting Seminoles pushed five runs across the plate in the top of the 11th to outlast the Blue Eagles.
Jadyn Miller singled in two runs in the winning rally, while Karli Haslam and Juana McElroy knocked in runs with singles. Miller finished with two singles and Haslam also had a double and two RBI. McElroy also doubled.
Brylee McFrederick had a double and Reese Binegar an RBI.
Haslam struck out 13 and walked four.
Jessa Anderson singled and tripled for Magnolia. Caroline Heil singled twice and Bella Sockman doubled.
Mallory McDiffitt had nine strikeouts and three walks.
Bridgeport 8, Toronto 6
TORONTO – Rowyn Herman belted a bases-clearing double and Vanessa Mullen also drove in three runs with a trio of singles as the Bulldogs won on the road.
Addie Snodgrass and Rylee McElroy singled in runs for Bridgeport.
Mullen relieved Hanna Brewer in the sixth to earn the win. Brewer fanned eight and Mullen three.
