Local archers compete in state competitions

This past weekend, several local archers hit the bullseye in the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources’ (WVDNR) annual West Virginia Archery in the Schools state tournament, taking place at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center on Saturday, March 29.

Triton Brown, a seventh grader from St. Michael’s Parish School, finished as the top overall male finisher regardless of age group, shooting a 298/300. Brown competed in the middle school individual male category. In the elementary school individual male category, fifth grader Parker Williams from West Liberty Elementary placed first with a 292/300.

More than 600 students participated in the tournament. To qualify, schools had to participate in the state qualifier.

Ohio bowmen were also competing recently, with Warren Local High School finishing fourth in the Ohio State National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) tournament with 3,268 points.

Sophomore Mackensie Mason placed fourth with a score of 286, and sophomore Raegan Kegley placed 12th with a score of 283.

In the middle school level, Warren Local Middle School sixth grader Liam Mahoney placed third with a score of 288.

Back in the mountain state, Brown and Williams made up two of the seven competitors who did well enough to move onto a future tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.

On the high school level, John Marshall senior Clayton Howard placed 10th with a score of 286. Tyler freshman Tristan Bassett finished third with a score of 290. Wheeling Park senior Kimber Koehler placed sixth in the high school individual female standings with a score of 286.

On the elementary school level, West Liberty Elementary had a second high placer, with fifth grader Abel Hays finishing fourth with a score of 280.

Additionally, Oak Glen Middle School competed in the W.Va. NASP tournament and placed third. Eighth grader Emily Bowersox placed 11th in her grouping with a score of 278.

Oak Glen Middle School placed third as a team in the tournament.
