BELLAIRE — It may only be the second week of the high school track and field season, but Martins Ferry’s Alanna Williams is already in midseason form.
During Saturday’s 70th running of the Bellaire Relays, the Purple Riders junior set the only meet record on the overcast day at Nelson Field. She toured the oval twice in a time of 2-minutes, 18.37-seconds, breaking the old mark set of 2:18.45 set in 2007.
“It really didn’t feel like I was running that fast,” Williams admitted. “It surprised me when they said it (my time) was a meet record.”
The key to success?
“I was just trying to get first so that I could get my team as many points as possible,” she continued.
Williams said that running on the indoor circuit this winter really helped her prepare for the outdoor season. She was the 800 indoor state champion.
She also teamed with Madison Oberle, Candance Oberla and Lakyn Call to win the 4×800 relay in a time of 10:16.89. She completed her day by anchoring the winning 4×400 relay team that consisted of Cadence Oberle, Call and Ireland Jennette. They timed out in 4:18.86.
Steubenville won both the boys and girls team titles.
