OVAC baseball semifinals begin Monday at higher seeded teams
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — After some number-crunching and last-minute results, the OVAC Baseball playoffs have been determined by conference officials.
The semifinal games will be played on Monday at 5 p.m. with the top two teams in each classification earning home games.
In the case of inclement weather, only five of the fields being utilized in semifinal action (Indian Creek, Wheeling Park, Morgantown, St. Clairsville and Toronto) have turf playing surfaces, with two being infield surfaces-only.
All five defending champions are in the playoff field. They are Morgantown (5A), St. Clairsville (4A), Wheeling Central (3A), Toronto (2A) and Madonna (1A). However, only the Maroon Knights and Blue Dons are the top seeds this year. The Mohigans, Red Devils and Red Knights are all No. 2.
Class 5A
All four qualifiers won 10-plus games and played at least 17 as Wheeling Park (13-6) used a strong start to earn the No. 1 seed and will host No. 4 Parkersburg South (10-7) at Patriot Field high atop the Friendly City. The Ohio County Patriots swept a doubleheader from the Wood County Patriots by the scores of 8-4 and 6-5 earlier this season.
Wheeling Park started 5-0 and 11-1 but have lost six of their last eight. Head coach Steve Myers won his 100th career game on Friday.
Parkersburg South, meanwhile, has won four straight and eight of nine.
In the other semifinal, second-seeded Morgantown (11-7) will entertain No. 3 Brooke (12-7) on Dale Miller Field inside Mylan Park. The two have not played this season.
The Bruins were 7-2 at one point but have won three in a row after a four-game losing streak.
Morgantown has lost two of its last four, including a 2-1 nod to Linsly last week.
Class 4A
None of the four qualifiers have reached the 10-win mark yet, but all four easily advanced to the semifinals.
Top-seeded Indian Creek (8-1) will face a familiar foe in No. 4 Harrison Central (8-4). The two teams met in a home-and-home series on Thursday and Friday, with the Redskins prevailing 5-0 and 9-2. Their lone loss came to Columbus St. Francis DeSales, 3-2, in a PBR event at Oregon Clay High School.
No. 2 St. Clairsville (9-1), which has won eight straight and defeated Indian Creek in last year’s championship game, will welcome No. 3 Edison (9-2) to the Junior Sports Complex on North Market Street. They also have not met this year.
The Red Devils opened the season with a home-and-home split against Martins Ferry but scored four times in the top of the seventh with two out and nobody on to stun Wheeling Park last week.
The Wildcats have won four of their last five and are seeking to play in the finals on their home field.
Class 3A
Top-seeded Wheeling Central (12-1) has been the top team in their class since the first pitch was thrown this season. It hosts No. 4 Monroe Central (6-4) on the Wheeling University diamond at the I-470 J.B. Chambers Sports Complex.
The Maroon Knights, who defeated Linsly 5-1 in last year’s title tilt, won their first 11 games before falling to unbeaten Caldwell, the No. 1 seed in Class 2A.
The Seminoles got a late start due to the state championship run of the basketball team, but started off 5-0 before hitting a slump. They have only won once in their last five outings and scored just one run in that span.
Wheeling Central won 12-2 earlier this season.
No. 2 Linsly (10-7) got off to a 1-2 start but has won six in a row, with four of those victories coming over OVAC playoff entrants. The Cadets will welcome No. 3 Martins Ferry (5-4) to Holloway Field.
The Purple Riders nipped Barnesville late Friday to punch their ticket. They have won two of their last four, losing to Bellaire and Union Local last week.
Class 2A
The top-seeded Redskins (8-0) will host No. 4 Shadyside (6-3) in a re-match of their April 9 game won by Caldwell, 5-0. The Redskins have allowed only 12 runs in their eight games.
No. 2 Toronto (8-2) is seeking a repeat title when it welcomes No. 3 East Palestine (8-3) to the Red Knights Complex. The Red Knights two losses are to Wheeling Central (2-1 in 10 inn.) and Boardman.
The Bulldogs are making their first-ever playoff appearance in their first year as an OVAC member. They dropped a 4-3 decision at Mathews on Thursday to snap a six-game winning streak.
Class 1A
Top-seeded Madonna (12-2) seems primed for another tournament title run as it was the lone team to win more than eight games in this classification. The Blue Dons welcome No. 4 Trinity Christian (7-8) to Edwin Bowman Field in downtown Weirton.
The other semi has No. 2 Conotton Valley (8-4) hosting third-seeded Cameron (9-7) in Bowerston. The Rockets have lost three of their last four. The Dragons have won four of their last five.
Championships
The winners will advance to the finals on Friday and Saturday at the Unified Sports Complex at Edison High School in Richmond. Pairings and times will be announced later in the week.
