Peterson looking to make history at Bordas & Bordas

WHEELING — The 8th annual Bordas & Bordas Amateur Golf Classic tees off Saturday, June 7-8 at Oglebay’s Crispin Golf Course. The two-day event features a $10,000 purse and crowns seven different champions in this 36-hole Medal, and Best-Ball events.

Weirton native Howie Peterson IV is trying to write history this summer, by winning his fourth championship in the past five years. Legendary Terry Dubois has won the most championships with six (1987,1988, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000)

Fred Jefferson and Evo Petri have won five times but mainly in the 1950s and 60s. Three-time champions include Ernie Hoffer, Larry Lis Jr., and Bryan Myers. Lis Jr. and Myers are in this year’s field gunning for a fourth title.

Peterson, the former Madonna High School and West Liberty University standout, won the 2021, 2022 and 2024 Bordas & Bordas titles. Last year he fired rounds of 64 and 67 (131) -11 to win the championship by one shot over Wheeling’s Cole Hand. Other participants who will be in the championship mix include Kalkreuth Roofing Amateur Champion Kyle Wensel, former Oglebay’s Men’s Golf Club Champion Mike Wetzel and reigning Men’s Club Champion Gavin Goodrich, who plays at Cal University and West Liberty University standouts Justin Doerr and Noah Seivertson.

At the end of the tournament, the Medal and Best-Ball champions will be presented with commemorative plaques. There will also be a First Flight and Senior champions — along with Best-Ball in each division. The Junior Division (high school or lower) champion wins the John B. Wilson Memorial Award. Linsly School’s Adam Gill, who won the title last year, is back to try to defend his title, but he’ll also be in the mix to win the Medal Championship.

Past champions who will be in this year’s field include two-time winners Joey Seabright and Floyd Shuler. Other former winners Mike Ricci and B.J. Tulodzieski are also signed up this year. Wheeling’s Bob Clark, who had his run of five straight Senior Division championships broken last year at the hands of George Templin, is also playing to get back in the winner’s circle.

Money raised from this year’s tournament goes to the Oglebay Foundation’s Access to the Parks Project which allows underprivileged kids to use Wheeling Park and Oglebay for free.
