Wheeling Central advances to Wooden Bat final after taking down Monroe Central

KIDWELL — West Virginia-ranked Wheeling Central (9-0) advanced to Saturday’s finals of the Matt Boggs Wooden Bat Classic with a 12-2 romp over Monroe Central in semifinal action Friday on the artificial surface at Tyler Consolidated High School. The game was halted in the bottom of the fifth due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The No. 1 Class AA Maroon Knights will play River at 2:30 Saturday.

Winning pitcher Seth Cover struck out five, walked a pair and yielded two singles. He also belted a double and triple to plate a pair of runs. He needed just 76 pitches, with 49 being strikes,

Zayne Rosnick drove in three runs with a single and sacrifice fly, while Clay Petry singled in two runs. Braxton Billick, Brayden Cover, Matt Criniti and Luke Tiu all had an RBI each.

Max Demchak had an RBI single for the Seminoles.

River 7, Tyler

Consolidated 1

Ty Nething pitched a complete game six-hitter with three strikeouts as the Pilots stunned the Silver Knights in the other semifinal.

Kaden Hunt singled twice and tripled to drive in two runs for River. Lucas Dennis also singled twice and tripled while Peyton Blue singled and doubled to plate a run. Easton Huntsman belted a solo home run. Cooper Roberts had two singles and an RBI. Cale Willis added a run-scoring base hit.

MORGANTOWN — The Patriots’ six-game winning streak came to a screeching halt with a pair of losses on Dale Miller Field.

In the opener, the Indians scored seven times in the first three innings and never looked back.

Ryland Robb singled, doubled and drove in a run. Paul McGee had a double.

In the nightcap, the Lions’ tallied three runs in the first and tacked on five more in the third in blanking the Patriots.

The Hagerstown, Md.-based Lions banged out a dozen hits, including two doubles and a home run.

Wheeling Park (11-3) plays Hurricane today.

St. Clairsville 7, Union Local 1

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — For the second time in three days, the Red Devils(3-1) have defeated the Jets by an identical score.

In a game moved from Morristown to Unified Bank Field at the Junior Sports Complex due to wet grounds, Roby Hanna struck out a career-high 14 Jets while walking one and allowing four hits. He also singled twice to drive in a run.

Mikey Balgo drove in three runs with two singles and a double. Brody Saunders also singled twice and doubled. Ryan Florence added an RBI single.

Logan Hess doubled in Union Local’s lone tally in the first.

SOFTBALL

Harrison Central 18, Buckeye Local 1

CADIZ — The Huskies got a measure of revenge for a loss to the Panthers earlier in the week.

Kamryn Crothers and Kara Blackburn each drove in three runs with two singles apiece to pace Harrison Central’s 15-hit attack. Bailey Smith knocked in two runs with a single and Kelcey Powers singled twice, doubled and had an RBI. Olivia Tonkovich drove in a run with a double and triple. Makayla Pelegreen singled, doubled and knocked in a run.

Emma Skinner struck out five, walked none and scattered five hits.

Barnesville 7, Bellaire 3

ST. JOE — The Shamrocks completed their week sweep of the host Big Reds as Lilly Welch collected a two-run single and Payton Dudzik homered on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.

Abigail Johnson had an RBI double and Sophia Carpenter a run-scoring single.

Marissa Pacifico had an RBI single for Bellaire.
