WHEELING — The Wheeling Central seniors got to complete their day of celebration with a couple of wins Wednesday, the Maroon Knights sweeping visiting Linsly in a Senior Day doubleheader inside the JB Chambers I-470 Sports Complex.
“We’ve got a lot of good seniors, they’re all good kids,” Wheeling Central head coach Buck Davidson said. “All my seniors are leaders whether they’re in the starting lineup or if they’re not. They show the kids how to be Wheeling Central Knights.”
Wheeling Central’s 2025 seniors include Josie Frizzell, Ava Hanson, Angelina Robrecht, Mia DiBias, Trina Baker and Hazel Tatich.
In the first leg of the day’s doubleheaders, Wheeling Central won 3-0, aided by a one-hit outing from Frizzell inside the circle. The senior star struck out 16.
In the second game, Olivia Kiaski took the mound, and pitched five innings in an abbreviated 9-1 win for the home team. The junior struck out five.
“It was a good couple games,” Davidson said. “Both pitchers did good, Josie pitched well in the first game, Liv pitched really well in the second game also. Played some good defense, made the plays we were supposed to, definitely hit the ball better in the second game than in the first. I was proud of them for making adjustments, and we started putting the ball in play and running the bases.”
Central’s bats were hot out of the gate- the first five Maroon Knight batters reached, including a two-run double struck by Maddie Miehle to the left field wall, and a one-run double from Frizzell which went to nearly the same location. Central led 3-0 after the first inning.
The home team tacked on one more in the second, Maddie Miehle beating a throw to first for a two-out infield hit that allowed pinch-runner Katie Palmer to cross home. Two more came across in the fourth, a well-struck ball to the outfield from Morgan Miehle turning into an inside-the-park home run after a poor throw in. Darcie Gardill also scored.
Linsly got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, Aubrei Joanou laying down a sacrifice bunt which scored Kenzie Ghaphery.
Balls put in play by Baker, Maddie Miehle and Bella Rine each brought in runs for Central in the fifth to trigger the eight-score run rule and end the game prematurely.
Linsly’s defense showed some cracks in the late innings, with three errors between the fourth and fifth innings, including on the game-winning at-bat.
“The second game, that’s kind of been our forte this year,” Linsly head coach Herb Minch said. “We hang around, and then we just collapse somewhere around the fifth, sixth, seventh inning. We’re just young, and not quite ready yet but we’re getting there.”
“I thought we had a good chance coming in and competing with Wheeling Central, who’s a pretty good program historically and we knew they were having one of their better years again this year. We’ve shown flashes of competing this year and we have some pitching we can put out there and I thought we hung with them the first game. At the end of the day we didn’t make the plays we needed, didn’t execute defensively.”
Wheeling Central is next schedule to play April 22 at home vs. Martins Ferry. Linsly is slated to return home vs. Monroe Central on April 18.
